Planning a trip to South Padre Island? Whether it’s your first time visiting or your fifth, this beautiful Texas beach town has something for everyone — miles of sandy coastline, delicious seafood, family-friendly attractions, and unforgettable sunsets. At Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals, we’re not just here to help you find the perfect beachfront stay — we are your local insiders for everything South Padre Island has to offer.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best times to visit, must-see sights, local dining gems, and, of course, where to stay for the ultimate beach experience.
The Best Time to Visit South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a year-round destination! We love this beach in any season! Here’s what to expect by season:
Spring (March–May):
Great weather (average temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s) and vibrant events like Spring Break Concerts.
Things to Consider: Spring Break crowds at restaurants and on some parts of the beach.
At Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals, our HOA does not allow Spring Breakers to rent at the complex so you’ll be safe from the crowds with us! And a major plus, we’re on the South end of the Island so there are plenty of restaurants and experiences on our end of the island so you can avoid traffic on Padre Boulevard. Prices at hotels will be particularly high. Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals maintains competitive prices to attract families so check us out if this is a time you are interested in visiting.
Summer (June–August):
We consider this peak season. It is a popular destination for families because of warm temperatures and lots of sun. Average temperatures range from the upper 80s to the low 90s and the Gulf waters are usually warm! We love boogie boarding in the gentle waves steps from the Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals.
Things to Consider: Because it is peak season, there are longer than normal wait times to eat out at popular restaurants during the usual Breakfast (9:00-10:00), Lunch (12:00-1:00) and Dinner (7:00-8:00) times. We recommend you go out at off peak times and try going somewhere that will give you a great view while you wait (I’ll go into this later in this post!). Also, crowds on the beach, especially on the weekends, can be larger. Fortunately, because our Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals are on the South end of the island, we are lucky to have fewer crowds than most!
Fall (September–November):
Honestly our favorite time to visit! Expect fewer crowds and mild weather — perfect for a quieter escape. Temperatures typically range from the mid-80s during the day to the high 60s to low 70s at night.
Activities to see while visiting in the fall are Sand Castle Days right in front of Clayton’s Beach Bar! It is usually held in October and brings sandcastle artists from all over to compete for the best sand sculpture awards!
Things to Consider: The weather closer to November and December can be less predictable so pack sweaters and warm clothing for those rainy or cooler days. Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals provides plenty of board games for those cool or rainy days so you’ve got options!
Winter (December–February):
A favorite for snowbirds–out of state visitors from colder northern states who are usually retired and seeking out sunny, warm beaches; enjoy lower rates and peaceful beaches.
Temperatures typically range from the low 60s to the low 70s during the day and 50s to 60s at night on cooler days/nights but most days are sunny with little rain.
This is our favorite time to go for walks on the beach and search for washed up treasures! There are usually interesting shells, drift wood and sometimes washed up creatures! An activity to try is the Annual Polar Bear Dip–a chilly but fun experience! Also, there is a major winter migration of birds that flock to South Padre Island. The best place to view them is at The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center (one of our favorite spots!). Let’s not forget about the lighted boat parade (December 6th this year)! There is a competition every year for the best decorated boat! It’s a great free holiday activity to watch or participate in.
Things to Consider:
The temperatures are usually pretty nice but it can be windier than normal on certain days which makes it feel colder when on the beach, and sometimes the sand is blown around a bit. Luckily at Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals, our condos have a pool that is not on the beach side and is protected by a courtyard so the wind and sand are not an issue. Plus the pool is heated! So if the weather does not cooperate one day, you’ve still got a spot to enjoy the water when you stay with us!
