If you think South Padre Island is only a summer destination—think again! Winter on SPI (December through February) is one of the best-kept secrets among travelers. Especially snowbirds seeking sunshine, mild temperatures, and a slower, more peaceful pace on the coast.
With daytime temperatures typically in the low 60s to low 70s, sunny skies, and fewer crowds, winter offers the perfect chance to experience the best of the island without the hustle and bustle. Whether you’re planning a long-term stay or a quick winter escape, here are the top reasons to visit South Padre Island during the cooler months—along with some can’t-miss seasonal activities.
1.
Enjoy Peaceful Beaches & Perfect Temperatures

While much of the country is bundled up, South Padre Island delivers beautiful weather. Winter is our favorite time for:
- Long beach walks
- Searching for washed-up treasures like shells, driftwood, and the occasional quirky sea creature
- Photography—the light is incredible this time of year
The cooler breezes can occasionally kick up the sand, but guests staying at Texas Vistas Vacation Rentals love that our heated pool is tucked away in a sheltered courtyard, completely protected from wind and blowing sand. So even on breezier days, you can still relax in warm water surrounded by palm trees.

2.
Experience the Island’s Famous Winter Bird Migration

Winter marks the arrival of thousands of migrating birds, making SPI one of the top birding destinations in the USA. The best place to witness this natural spectacle is the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center (one of our personal favorites!), where you can stroll boardwalks through wetlands and watch colorful flocks up close. Don’t miss the Annual Winter Wildlife Expo, held February 5–7, at the Birding & Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary—perfect for nature lovers of all ages.
Cost: Adults $12, Children $5
3.
